Conceptual design

Hey there!

After reading the manifesto’s, especially first things first I looked at some conceptual designs that focusses on different matters.  Here is a few examples of good conceptual designs and also a short discussion of what the matter is they are looking at and how effective it is.

Image 1:

When I look at this image, I see many things and I realize how successful the design is.  What you see in this image is a forest representing lungs. The one lung is damaged.  From my point of view the lungs represent a smokers lungs that is getting damaged while smoking.  The trees and the forest represent nature and this makes people aware that not only does smoking damage your lungs and affects you health, it is also harmful for nature and it makes people aware that smoking causes pollution of many kinds.

Image 2:

tumblr_lxxjugGPLt1r1cueho1_500

Yet this is another example of brilliant conceptual designing.  If you were a smoker, this image would immediately draw your attention if you wanted to see it or not.  This image plays with your emotions and also makes you feel stupid because you know it is true that you are slowly killing yourself but yet you still keep on smoking.  In this image the main focus is smoking will kill you eventually, and to a smoker this might be just the way to get them to stop smoking.

Image 3:

conceptual-ad-7

This image in an excellent example of making people aware of things by using clever design ideas and skills.  I mean if I buy a milkshake or soft drink from a place with a design like that on, I would immediately be aware of what they are trying to say and then I will focus more on the cause.  This conceptual design is brilliant because you don’t only see it once, you see it every time you put the straw in you mouth and your brain automatically programs itself to think in a different way.  In this case it makes us aware of air pollution and that every time we start our cars the air gets polluted.  If I had to see this image and know that I drove to buy my soft drink, I would feel so bad and guilty that the next time I would rather think of walking around the corner to buy what ever I need.

Incomplete manifesto for Growth – Bruce Mau

Wow folks, I didn’t quite realize how influential and also interesting manifesto’s can be.  I started reading this manifesto of Bruce Mau and I actually started laughing at myself because I realized how many of these bullets are actually so true.

Here you can find the bullets of the manifesto.  I will provide you with a link if you would like to read the whole manifesto.  If you are an idea generator of any kind you have to read this and laugh and agree with me.

.                      Allow events to change you

.                      Forget about good

.                      Process is more important than outcome

.                      Love your experiments

.                      Go deep

.                      Capture accidents

.                      Study

.                      Drift

.                      Begin anywhere

.                      Everyone is a leader

.                      Growth happens

.                      Harvest ideas

.                      Edit applications

.                      Keep moving

.                      Slow down

.                      Don’t be cool

.                      Ask stupid questions

.                      Collaborate

.                      Blank spaces

.                      Stay up late

.                      Work the metaphor

.                      Be careful to take risks

.                      Repeat yourself

.                      Make your own tools

.                      Stand on someone’s shoulders

.                      Avoid software

.                      Don’t clean your desk

.                      Don’t enter awards competitions

.                      Read only left-hand pages

.                      Make new words

.                      Think with your mind

.                      Forget technology

.                      Organization = Liberty

.                      Don’t borrow money

.                      Listen carefully

.                      Take field trips

.                      Make mistakes faster

.                      Imitate

.                      Scat

.                      Break it, stretch it, bend it, crush it, crack it, fold it

.                      Explore the other edge

.                      Coffee breaks, cab rides, green rooms

.                      Avoid fields

.                      Jump fences

.                      Laugh

.                      Remember

.                       Power to the people

When I read this manifesto I realized how many of these are actually working for me.  I also learned quite a few new tricks to break my mind block that I get sometimes.  Things like stay up late and just laugh is things I normally do with my design friends and to be honest some of the greatest ideas where generated in those fun and crazy times.  So do yourself a favor and read this manifesto, try a few things out, and if you fail in those try some of the others. (haha) never give up on a idea, it is always there you just have to dig a bit deeper.

First things First Manifesto 2000

Hey there guys. It’s been quite a while since I last posted.  A few days ago I came across the first things first manifesto.  I would like to tell you more about my perception about this manifesto and also how it reflects in my life as a designer.

The manifesto focuses on a few things, but a few things cam to my attention. The first one is that designers are taught that advertising of products and services are the main focus of design.  It also states that advertising is what design is all about.  My honest opinion is that advertising plays a big role in graphic design and this also reflects in my life as a designer because all projects that I do is to advertise something or selling the perfection of a product to the world.  Further more the manifesto states that designing is more than just advertising, it is about educating people and making them aware of things that needs to be focused on.  Social matters such as HIV, drugs, pollution, saving water etc. is important things that people should know about.  Now to me this is very difficult as a designer, because the world already knows about all of these social matters and in some way it gets boring to them when everybody wants to draw attention to this.  As a designer you have to very clever in order to draw the right attention that will actually focus on what you are trying to say.

To get back to first things first folks is that if we don’t focus on our own environment, health and safety there won’t be anything to work with in order to produce products or provide services.  So let your mind think about what designers really need to focus on and rather read the poster about HIV or pollution than just ignoring it because tomorrow a designer will help you sell you product.  If you ever think of first things first, respect the fact that we as designers are doing our best to make your world a better place no matter what the design is al about.

Jimmy Choo

Hey there! I hope you are all doing great and that my previous post made you think a bit the past few days.  I am back again today to talk about a contemporary brand that I admire according to their style, their branding strategies and their identity as whole.  As I looked around I realized how many brands there are and how many brands has a unique style of branding.  I looked at a few magazines and how brands advertise.  Well to get to the point of discussion is that I chose to talk about Jimmy Choo today.

jimmy-choo-placeholder-940x360

Jimmy Choo is not just any brand, it is a brand that any woman desires to have and to wear.  Jimmy Choo draws my attention time and again by the intriguing way of advertising and displaying themselves.  Jimmy Choo appeals to me simply because of it’s style.  The style is glamorous, it gives a sense of feminine and it also lifts your standards.  Jimmy Choo is explained to be an iconic luxury brand defined by the empowered sense of glamour and a confident sense of style.

I also admire Jimmy Choo for where the brand comes from.  It started of with a shoemaker named Jimmy Choo in the early 1990’s.  He later on became so popular that he catered for the global jet set including Princess Diana.  The company of Jimmy Choo was founded in 1996 and from there on it was only great success at their door.

Jimmy Choo enjoyed immediate success after the sexy cuts, fashionable designs and Italian craftsmanship, which started a sophisticated clientele.  The whole idea behind Jimmy Choo was to create a global luxury business that everybody can enjoy.  When I look at the fact that Jimmy Choo started with shoes and how it expanded to handbags, sunglasses, scarves etc. I realize that this is why I became a graphic designer.  Every brand is an opportunity and a challenge to build and to expand a brand in order to gain success.

Jimmy-Choo-Bag

Jimmy Choo was the first brand that brought handbags and shoes to Hollywood where the red carpet proved the ideal runway for the brand.  Today Jimmy Choo is a stylish icon for celebrities and royalty.

The advertisements of Jimmy Choo is the most important part that appeals to me.  The brand is defined by the bold dramatic advertising portraying glamorous but strong women in heels and luxurious handbags.  Their advertising also links with their stylish designs by adding style and glamour to their advertisements.  They also make sure they advertise in glamorous magazines and where people with style and money to afford Jimmy Choo will see the advertisements.

Jimmy-choo-Colour-crush-Shoe-Collectionjimmychoo_poolJimmy+ChooJimmy-Choo-1jimmychoo1

Jimmy Choo’s vision is to create one of the world’s most treasured luxury brands.  When I think about this vision I realize that Jimmy Choo’s standards are extremely high but I think it would be great if they can maybe figure something out to make Jimmy Choo more accessible for young women without lowering their standards.  I would like to see this change happening because young women have a desire to feel stylish and glamorous.  Jimmy Choo can make them feel worthy again.

The international typographic style used in contemporary logo design.

Hey there guys. So I hoped that you found the last post interesting and that one small seed also inspired you the way it inspires me. This week is all about the international typographic style.  It is still very popular in today’s contemporary design. I am going to look at a few logo designs and hopefully through my analysis and explanations you will be able to identify the ITS in other contemporary designs.

I will start off by giving you a few examples of the use of ITS in logos and then I will discuss a few of them to give you an overview of the characteristics that you can look out for.

Looking at the logo of ‘Suit Africa’ you can clearly see the ITS principles.  The geometric shapes used in the illustration of the suit used in the ‘U’ is typical ITS.  The designer used San serif type throughout the design.  The hierarchy of the two words used is clear and also sets focus to the main logo and illustration.  The hierarchy also creates an asymmetrical balance.  The colours used are vibrant as the red draws attention and the white contrasts with the black.  This logo is simplistic and this makes it very successful.

modern logos 11

The next logo I will be discussing is ‘Textura’.  This logo is very simple and the use of illustration and text compliments each other very well.  The illustration is geometrical as you can se the rectangles are formed just with clean straight lines.  In this logo the use of grids are clear as the illustration is placed above and in the middle of the text.  The designer also made use of san serif type.  You will notice that nothing is exaggerated in this logo this is because the ITS focus on simplicity. Contemporary-Logo-Design-textura

When I look at the next logo the first thing I notice is the geometric shapes used to build the type in the logo.  This is very interesting and draws attention towards the logo.  The asymmetrical balance between the illustration and the rest of the type is the second thing that caught my eye.  The logo is quite heavy on the left hand side and the focus lies on the illustration.  When you look at the rest of the type san serif type is used but the letters and also the words are placed in grids and with even spaces between them.    UpArt Logo-Tagline_FA

Redgate’s logo is based on the ITS just by using san serif type.  The creators of the ITS style believed that san serif type made words more legible.  By using type in the correct way the logo meets with a few other characteristics as well.  There is a definite hierarchy and it also creates an asymmetrical balance.  The colour use also adds to the balance as the navy blue draws more attention because it is contrasting with the light grey colour. redgate-freeriders-logo-portfolio-main

The last logo I will discuss is actually quite interesting as it has many of the characteristics of the ITS.  The illustration is created out of simplistic geometrical shapes.  San serif type is used throughout the design. By using different font sizes and colours the hierarchy is clear.  You can also see that grids are used to place the words and there is also an asymmetrical balance because of the illustration that is slightly bigger than the rest of the type but also because of the ‘we make your world’ that’s placed on the right.

So I hope you enjoyed the journey through the characteristics of the international typographic style.  Do yourself a favour this week and see if you can recognize the ITS in some other contemporary designs.

local design magazine – one small seed

Hey hey! It is a brand new year with so many new topics to blog about!  Cool things to experience and lots to learn about.

This year I decided to get some inspiration from different things: magazines, other blogs, TV shows, illustration, photographs and many more.  I found my first inspiration, the design magazine “one small seed”.

onesmallseed

Just some cover pages to introduce you to the awesome magazine:

images one_small_seed1 one-small-seed_02 finalbirdcoverblack white info onesmallseed_issue23-Cover

One small seed was launched in October 2005 but it is not just a magazine.  It is a South African media house with different ways to express awesome things.  One small seed is all about inspiration and how to share it.  It consists of a blog, social networking, online TV, photography publications, a production company, a series of different events and then the most important of all; the magazine that brings everything together.

Apart form one small seed’s website, the magazine is something cool to have.  A perfect sized book to carry with you all the time and refer back to for some inspiration or sometimes just for some relaxation.  To me it is all about experiencing something with your senses.  What is cool about the magazine is that it feels designer like.  The whole magazine is printed on a glossy paper and makes it so much nicer to page through.  This also links to the modern style of the magazine, it has a funky look and feel but it is also very professional.  The style of the magazine is inspiring because of the different design elements brought into harmony on each page.

Here are a few examples of the page layouts in the magazine:

3094356741_8a2f7d8eeb Modern Day Goddess one-small-seed-zg

After looking through the magazine and looking at the layout and type used, I got so much inspiration and realized that you can make something look interesting without using to many things.  The layout is clean and still interesting; each page is handled with care and respect towards design.  This is what inspires me the most, the fact that each page is handled as a piece of art.  The pages are not overwhelmed with to many elements and designs but it is just enough to keep you interested to page to the next topic.

When I look at the type it makes the pages complete, one typeface are used right through the magazine for the articles itself and then different typefaces are used in an interesting way to compliment what ever topic is discussed and illustrated.  The type makes the magazine because the type is wisely used in terms of the white space left open.  The content is still enough but the type is placed so well that you don’t feel all you do is read.

The content of the magazine is the most interesting part and makes the magazine such a huge success. It is not just an ordinary design mag; it is a showcase for talent of any kind.  It is a platform to let go of all creativity and develop it into something extraordinary.  The magazine focus on South African artists but also give us some international influence in order to strive for bigger and better dreams and goals.  This magazine is not all about design it is about artists of any kind; musicians, photographers, architects, designers and illustrators.

The following link will take you to the different categories that one small seed’s magazine covers. Here you will also find some more detail on how they look into the different categories and how they incorporate it through the magazine.

http://www.onesmallseed.com/category/categories/

Looking at the different categories the magazine covers, you will find that the genre of this magazine is a modern styled magazine with many topics, stories and events to cover.  From what I experienced I think that the niche of this magazine is not just for advanced designers but it is for newborn artist looking for guidance and inspiration.

The next link will take you to a sneak peak of the current edition.  Here you will be able to view some articles and fun stuff going on in the edition.

I hope you find this awesome magazine as inspiring as i did… keep it real till the next time 🙂
