So friends, after looking at the Bauhaus movement and where it comes from it is kind of easy to see why it still has such a big influence on the designers of today. It is said that the Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in the modernist architecture and modern design, especially influencing the development in art, architecture, graphic design and interior design.
The Bauhaus focused on meeting the needs of society by creating something that is utilitarian but also cleverly designed. They believed that less is more in design and this is clear when you see that they try to use the minimum to create something that is still unique and aesthetic.
When we look at the Bauhaus movement we realize that they focused more on stylistic aspects but also incorporating it with functionality. In the contemporary furniture, building and other article designs we recognize that all designs are stylistic focused on and are also very functional for what it’s designed for. The aims of Bauhaus and the modern world are not very different from each other as the modern world aims to define a style of time, which encapsulate modern designs.
To compare the functions and principles of each movement is easy because it is very relative to each other as the modern movement focused on principles such as the expression of volume rather than mass (less is more), balance rather than preconceived symmetry and the expulsion of applied art.
The Bauhaus still has a great influence on typographic designs and the principles that Bauhaus used are still clear in contemporary designs. The lowercase and sans serif typeface are still very popular in design and used regularly.
The Bauhaus concentrated on the new and the future, which is probably why it is still noticeable in the contemporary design. It is nice to recognize previous art movements in our contemporary designs and in some way it feels amazing to be able to relate to some design principles that the Bauhaus had. Don’t you think that it is so cool to know that when you put on clothes in the morning, or watch a movie or walk into a building that it actually comes form a certain movement that has been used long before we were even born.
Take care friends, and keep up the inspiring and motivated attitude to learn more and to discover different things in art and design and where it comes from. Try to incorporate your knowledge in your designs and create something outstanding!
Hello blogger friends…
Well the last few days I’ve been doing research on the different art movements, where it comes from, how it developed into the different movements and how it affected the design world of today.
One of the most interesting movements to me is the Bauhaus movement, especially because it is still visible in the modern style used today. The Bauhaus sometimes referred to as the house of building or the house of construction, was found by the architect Walter Gropius in Germany – 1919. The Bauhaus school emerged out of the 19th century and its main aims were to reunite the applied arts and manufacturing and reform the education of art. Their approach was to work on the understanding of art relationship to society and technology. Another major function of the Bauhaus was to combine crafts and fine arts.
The Bauhaus school had an interesting curriculum where they focused on originality and influence. This wheel program explains the curriculum.
The outer ring represents a 6 months preliminary course concentrating on practical formal analysis, particular in the properties of forms, colors and material. The two middle rings represents a 3 year course that focused on problems related to form and then also focused on technical craft skills. The center specialized in building construction.
Bauhaus are recognized by many characteristics. They used geometric shapes in an asymmetry structure. They also used shapes, bars and rules to unify or separate elements in contrast with using them as decoration in design. Horizontal and Vertical lines were dominant in their compositions and creations. The Bauhaus made use of extreme contrast in type size and weight to emphasize certain parts in their designs. They found interest in san serif typefaces. When it comes to color they used different color tints to emphasize key elements and key words in their typographic designs. It interests me that these characteristics are visible in all their designs for example their building constructions, their furniture designs, their advertisement approaches etc. I am also inspired by these characteristics in my own design approaches.
In my next post I will be describing the impact that the Bauhaus had on modern style design and also how I see the influence of Bauhaus in our every day designs.
Hello hello. so me and a few friends decided to write our own manifesto just to state our ideals and our goals as we see it in life and in our workplace. Let us know what you can think and if you can think of something that we can add! So here it goes!
Our own manifesto:
- The essential surviving words in our everyday routine is: motivation, positivity and hard work.
- We would want a holiday all year round, to get rid of our frustration and sleeplessness of being a design student.
- We declare that the world is over-concerned with wealth, and people are only focussed on the outward. We want to exalt this idea, and let people believe in the inward again.
- We live in a world of fast-growing technological advancements and we declare to support the scientists every step of the way. Without technology, our work is ruined.
- As graphic designers we must fill our days with colour, fresh ideas and motivation so that we can be most successful as designers.
- People are visual human beings and that allows us designers to communicate to our people in a way that they will memorize it and add their own meanings.
- As designers we strive to create something new, something to open the world’s eyes. So our goal is to let go of the past traditional way of doing things! We create, not repeat!
- We want to establish peace and help our nation to become a proud nation.
- We would like to demolish weapons, drugs, distrust and racism, so that we can move forward in peace.
SO that is that! Feels pretty awesome just to give a piece of our minds and what we believe in! YOu should try it sometime!
